Brands were/are necessary to keep track of your cattle. There are places where fences can’t be built to keep cattle on their own range. Brand inspectors were hired to check the brands before cattle were shipped. Cowboys from each ranch would send at least one “rep” to each ranch roundup in the fall. The reps would look for their brand and bring those cattle home. Ear marks were another way of identification.

These are examples of brands registered in Big Horn County in 1972, these brands are passed on to the next generation. I will be glad to do look ups for you. E-mail me!
